Working Without a Work Permit

There are some classes of individuals who do not need a work permit to work in Canada. I've provided a partial list below but please take note: there are numerous pitfalls and very specific requirements to be met in order to qualify to work without a permit.

Even if you believe you fall within one of these categories, it is essential that you get legal advice to confirm your ability to work in Canada without a permit:

  • Certain business visitors to Canada
  • Diplomats
  • Military personnel
  • Certain officers of foreign governments
  • Full-time university or college students working on campus during the validity of their study permit
  • Performing artists
  • Athletes and coaches
  • News reporters and crews
  • Public speakers
  • Convention organizers
  • Clergy
  • Judges/referees
  • Academic examiners
  • Expert witnesses
  • Medical students
  • Civil aviation inspectors
  • Crew members of foreign-owned transport companies
  • Emergency service providers

I'll expand on some of these categories in future blogs.
